We study an eye disease using mouse models. Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by retinal ganglion cell death and vision loss. We perform molecular and histological analysis of retinal neuron degeneration in diseased condition; also physiological recording or imaging of these neurons and visual behavioral measurement.
You will work with mice in a laboratory, so first thing is to take all required animal training and safety training. The general lab work includes: routine check of animal colonies, lab work with sectioning of mouse brain or retinal samples; histology/immunostaining; data analysis such as cell counting using specialized software.
Students need to take courses such as introductory level of Biology, neuroscience, molecular and cell biology.
independent lab work; logic thinking; and scientific communication.
