Dominican Voices is an oral history project documenting education and childhood in the Dominican Republic between 1920-1950. The goal of the project is to create a collection of videotaped and audio interviews of Dominicans born and raised in the Dominican Republic during the early 20th century.

I am looking for students fluent in Spanish who are interested in transcribing and translating 30 to 60-minute interviews.

Position Description:

Dominican Voices is dedicated to documenting and preserving the educational experiences of individuals in the Dominican Republic during the early 20th century. This project aims to explore where and how people were educated, highlighting the differences in experiences across various regions, and examining the impact of gender and class on their educational journeys. Through a series of Spanish-language interviews, we will capture the personal narratives of Dominicans who lived through this transformative period. These interviews will be filmed in the style of "Humans of New York," with English subtitles to ensure accessibility to a broader audience. The project will culminate in the creation of a digital platform that will house these videos, showcasing the rich history and beautiful landscapes of the Dominican Republic.

Required Skills:

As the interviews are conducted in Spanish, students must be native or fluent Spanish-speakers.
