Workshops and Office Hours

The following workshops were offered during the 2021-2022 academic year. Workshops took place on the first and third Wednesday of each month in Clemons Library, Room 204. 

Workshops for the 2022-2023 academic year will be posted closer to the start of the fall term.

Fall 2021

September 1 | Getting started in research & creative inquiry

In this session we will equip participants with some effective thoughts and approaches to cultivate agency in research & creative pursuits and to seek out opportunities for involvement. This is appropriate for students at all levels, you do not need to be actively participating in research & creative inquiry to benefit from this session.

September 15 | Characteristics of researchers

In this session we will empower students to be independent learners willing to seek out their own resources, ask questions, and participate in research as a conversation. 

October 6 | Getting started in research & creative inquiry

In this session we will equip participants with some effective thoughts and approaches to cultivate agency in research & creative pursuits and to seek out opportunities for involvement. This is appropriate for students at all levels, you do not need to be actively participating in research & creative inquiry to benefit from this session.

October 20 | Funding your research 

In this session we will introduce several grants at UVA available for students hoping to pursue substantial research and creative projects. We will discuss helpful approaches to take when preparing a grant application, and highlight other ways to find opportunities within and beyond UVA. 

November 3 | Getting started in research & creative inquiry

In this session we will equip participants with some effective thoughts and approaches to cultivate agency in research & creative pursuits and to seek out opportunities for involvement. This is appropriate for students at all levels, you do not need to be actively participating in research & creative inquiry to benefit from this session.

November 17 | Funding your research

Spring 2022

January 12 | *ONLINE* ACC Meeting of the Minds Information Session 

The 2022 ACC Meeting of the Minds undergraduate research conference will take place on April 1-3, 2022 here at the University of Virginia. Students in all majors are encouraged to apply to represent the University of Virginia at this annual Atlantic Coast Conference undergraduate research conference. Come to this session to learn more about the conference and how to apply!

January 19 | UVA Undergraduate Research Symposium Information Session

The Undergraduate Research Symposium provides a chance for all interested undergraduates at the university to present what they have learned and accomplished during research and creative inquiry to a larger audience. During this session we will cover what to expect from the symposium, how to register, and how to prepare a strong abstract.

The 2022 Undergraduate Research Symposium will take place on April 12 and abstract submissions are due by March 1st.

February 2 | Getting started in research & creative inquiry

In this session we will equip participants with some effective thoughts and approaches to cultivate agency in research & creative pursuits and to seek out opportunities for involvement. This is appropriate for students at all levels, you do not need to be actively participating in research & creative inquiry to benefit from this session.

February 16 | Preparing effective poster presentations  

How can I cover a year’s worth of work (or more) on just one poster? During this session we will cover how to construct, prepare, and present research and creative projects using posters. The material we cover will be tailored to the guidelines for the Undergraduate Research Symposium but will be helpful for students thinking about presenting their work at any conference or symposium.

March 2 | Getting started in research & creative inquiry

In this session we will equip participants with some effective thoughts and approaches to cultivate agency in research & creative pursuits and to seek out opportunities for involvement. This is appropriate for students at all levels, you do not need to be actively participating in research & creative inquiry to benefit from this session.

March 16 | Preparing effective oral presentations   

How do I explain my results? Where do I begin when explaining my project? During this session we will cover how to construct, prepare, and present research and creative projects during oral presentations. The material we cover will be tailored to the guidelines for the Undergraduate Research Symposium but will be helpful for students thinking about presenting their work at any conference or symposium.

April 6 | Getting started in research & creative inquiry

In this session we will equip participants with some effective thoughts and approaches to cultivate agency in research & creative pursuits and to seek out opportunities for involvement. This is appropriate for students at all levels, you do not need to be actively participating in research & creative inquiry to benefit from this session.

*Thursday April 7, 4 - 5 p.m.* | Technical Compatibility Session – Undergraduate Research Symposium

Are you presenting your work as an oral presentation during the upcoming Undergraduate Research Symposium? Swing by (Clemons Library Room 204) and see if your presentation loads and displays properly during this session. We will provide one of the PCs to be used on the day of the event, which will help you understand how your visual aids (PowerPoint, Google Slides) will function when you arrive to present your work.
