Research Focus: 

I am writing a book on artificial intelligence and its effects on democracy. I would like to assemble a research team to help me make sense of the fast-moving corpus of research on these matters and to serve as editors of the book chapters as I produce them.

Position Description: 

Research assistants needed to help produce a book on artificial intelligence and democracy. Assistants would meet biweekly with Professor Vaidhyanathan to discuss scholarly literature, to learn how to enter details and notes in Zotero, to write summaries of the literature, to evaluate the value and relevance of the work, to participating actively in research meetings, and to present their own findings and observations in the process of encouraging independent research going forward. 

Required Skills: 

Skills required for this position include a strong critical sensibility about received claims about technology, deep curiosity, and strong organizational skills.

Training/Certification: 
Assistants will have to complete the Zotero training provided by UVA Libraries. https://library.virginia.edu/node/1776

Research assistants will learn:
• The basics of how artificial intelligence works.
• The immediate consequences of artificial intelligence on our media and information ecosystem.
• How to use Zotero to manage research and bibliographies.
• How to assess the quality of scholarly work and journalism about artificial intelligence.
