Undergraduates In The News
It is common knowledge that undergraduate STEM students’ underrepresented minority status (i.e., Black, Hispanic, women, first-generation, low-income) has the potential to significantly impact their educational experience. Despite quantitative data on the persistence and achievement of these individuals, little is known about their perceptions of these experiences.
The main purpose of the research is to understand the ways in which both undergraduates and graduate students can benefit from working with each. Consequently. I have been tasked with reading transcripts of meetings and interviews from laboratories. After doing this, I worked on coding the data and creating categories for relevant themes.
The current research that is being conducted in the psychology department is one that involves assessing individual spatial skills, abstract reasoning skills, understanding if people have implicit association toward gender roles and gender spatial play. As individuals grow older, the type of toys that they choose to play with is heavily influenced by their parents.
The purpose of this project was to evaluate strategies for addressing the opioid epidemic and predict the future of the epidemic for individual American states. Opioid overdoses lead to roughly 116 deaths per day across the United States. Policy responses vary drastically by state, and many programs are not supported by data on their impact of addressing the crisis.
One distinguishing hallmark of cancer cells includes a deregulated cellular metabolism that can be reprogrammed to preferentially exhibit dependence on glycolysis over oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) even in the presence of oxygen (Warburg Effect).
Arctic tundra vegetation has been dynamic over time, especially as the present-day climate change warms the Arctic regions at twice the rate of the global average. In general, the “greenness” of arctic tundra vegetation has been increasing throughout the Arctic (e.g. Alaska, Canada, and northern Russia) over at least the past 5 decades, suggesting broad environmental changes in these regions.
Tissue fibrosis is a pathological scarring process triggered by chronic inflammatory processes resulting from repeated damage such as viral infection, chemical insult, or injury to the tissue.
Atherosclerosis, also known as hardening of the arteries, is a condition where an artery wall thickens as a result of buildup of cholesterol or plaque. It is a major cause of death and disability in the United States, accounting for approximately 50% of all deaths in adults.
Previously completed research in the field of motion magnification is applied to civil engineering concepts in the fields of damage identification. Motion magnification amplifies minute signals in videos to a large scale by modifying pixels based on similarities in color or motion.
Ecological processes have shown sensitive responses to changes in marine carbonate chemistry (e.g., dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration and pH levels). Through water-column mixing via strong winds, hurricanes can introduce the changes in marine carbonate chemistry and possibly accelerate the process of ocean acidification.
After the Roman dictator Sulla besieged and colonized Pompeii in 89 BCE, he instituted Roman-style elections that continued until the city’s demise in the 79 CE eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Modern historians know this because when Pompeii was rediscovered in the late sixteenth century, they found electoral notices painted on the walls.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) caused by atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death worldwide. This disease is characterized by the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque made of substances including lipids and cellular waste. Succeeding plaque buildup, Smooth Muscle Cells (SMCs) migrate and proliferate to form a fibrous cap that stabilizes the plaque.
Methane from natural gas is a critical resource, but the difficulty of transporting natural gas has resulted in underutilization of methane. In oil wells, excess methane is flared because it is not cost-effective to capture, releasing large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.
United States Navy vessels are susceptible to intergranular corrosion due to a humid, chlorine-saturated environment. The presence of copper metal accelerates IGC growth in grain boundaries of aluminum alloys, decreasing the aluminum’s structural integrity and lifetime. To reduce cost and labor of repair and to increase longevity of vessels, resistant alloys are to be employed.
This study aimed to define and then compare two sets of vocal quality terms commonly implemented by singing professionals, front vs back and light vs dark, using acoustic, aerodynamic, and perceptual measurements, as well as a survey asking voice professionals to rate and define them.
