In the coming years, the use of low-powered integrated circuits in self-powered systems and the Internet of Things will require millions, if not billions of sensors to be powered. This project aims to meet that need by exploiting temperature gradients through the use of thermoelectric generators.
Self-assembling peptide hydrogels create finely tunable microenvironments to promote cell proliferation and differentiation . Previous work has shown that such hydrogels can be chemically modified while retaining physical characteristics and are capable of protecting cells during syringe injection.
Injection of pluripotent stem-cell derived cardiomyocytes and neurons represents a promising strategy to treat tissue damaged in heart or neurodegenerative diseases and trauma.
Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) is a cancer arising from the squamous cells of the oral and nasal cavities as well as the larynx and pharynx. Despite over 800,000 individuals being afflicted with this disease across the globe each year, current treatment options remain poor.
How can teacher language motivate students to ask questions and think more deeply? This research, under the supervision of Dr. Jamie Jirout, sought to answer that question by investigating the impact of teachers’ rhetoric in preschool classrooms on children’s curiosity and motivation.
Every year, approximately 200,000 people tear their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Of that population, half go on to reconstructive surgery (ACLR). However, statistics have proven that once an ACL is torn, a second tear is more likely to occur in either knee, given the same activity level is sustained.
Although traditional beliefs are important to many South Africans, there is a gap in the literature about how traditional religious belief and use of traditional healing services interact with social welfare/poverty status. Standard poverty assessments have not explored the poverty status of the traditionally religious.
Previous research has shown that people are good at judging others’ happiness. Judgments of others’ happiness are significantly associated with the person’s self-reported happiness. Little is known, however, about how people form such impressions about others’ happiness. In the present study, we examined what kinds of cues people use to judge their close friends’ happiness.
The Ledger is an online, peer-reviewed scholarly journal that publishes articles on cryptocurrency, blockchain, and other relevant topics related to computer science, economics, or mathematics involved.
This study investigated the impact of family dynamics (family harmony and family conflict) on adolescent reported depressive symptoms via natural mentoring relationships (i.e., nonparental caring adults selected by adolescents from their pre-existing social networks). Participants in the current study included 215 self- identified Black adolescents whose ages ranged from 12 to 15 years old.
Binge eating is characterized as the unrestrained consumption of large amounts of food within a brief time period and is a heritable trait of eating disorders often associated with anxiety and depression. Not surprisingly, such eating disorders as Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED), associate strongly with heightened impulsivity and drug seeking behavior.
Obesity is a major public health issue that affects over one in three American adults annually, over 90 million adults total.1 Consequently, a major part of America populace is at a higher risk of death in motor vehicle crashes (MVCs), as obesity is considered a large co-morbidity factor during traffic accidents. 2 Kent et al.
The mechanism by which pathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) trespasses into the gastrointestinal tract remains heavily under-investigated, even though it is the second most common cause of child mortality in developing countries. Previous research has supported the role of chemotaxis in the colonization by E.
Cytokines are small protein signaling molecules secreted by immune cells in response to pathogens in order to increase communication and coordination between cells.
Metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) is a group of metabolic conditions that occur together and promote the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes. Disease conditions include abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, elevated serum triglyceride levels, depressed serum high-density lipoprotein levels, elevated blood glucose levels, and hypertension.
