Faculty from all disciplines across the University of Virginia are invited to display and discuss their work at the Research Showcase. This event is a great way to help undergraduate students explore and expand their interests and potentially recruit some of them to work with you.
Interested faculty can sign up for the Research Showcase HERE. Deadline to sign-up is October 5th.
Session Types
Faculty participants may sign up for either of the following:
-
Fair Session – Sign up for a table in the Ballroom where you can display artifacts, equipment, instruments, posters, papers, books, etc. from your research. You can request a table and a vertical tableau board or just a table. You can participate in one 1.5-hour session or the full 3-hour event.
-
Fireside Chat – An option for faculty who cannot commit to a 1.5-hour session in the Ballroom or who simply prefer this format. You will have a timeslot (20-30 minutes depending on demand) in the Main Lounge by the fireplace where students can pull up a comfortable chair to hear about your research and ask questions. We recommend that you prepare a short 5–10-minute talk and then facilitate a conversation.
Considerations for Participating in the Research Showcase
-
Don’t be afraid to show your curiosity and excitement about the research. It will make you more approachable to students. Nerds welcome!
-
Focus on providing a concise, broad overview of your work. Consider speaking to a few precise questions you’re trying to answer, specific methods you use, where you are in the research process, and how students could be involved with your work.
-
Even if you are not actively recruiting undergraduate researchers, it is likely you will be asked about how undergraduates can get involved. We suggest coming prepared with simple next steps for interested students. This might include: training(s) or particular coursework students should complete, an application for interested students, or other instructions.
